Si o'u alofa, talofa lava - well my name is Faafetai (formally Momoemausu) now Numia (from Savaii Tufutafoe...). I attended Samoa College from 1978-(part of)1981, so I'm a real way bax. I hated school back then, (being new to the country from NZ) but I loved the students & MY culture & I ended up leaving my heart in samoa. Mr Jacobs was the principal at the time. & I stayed in the SC Hostel for a couple of years. My fav. teacher to tease was Mr Weeks (Baha'i) & the most feared was Mrs Faasau (i aint even sure if she actually taught at SC)...the most laid back, funnily enuf was...Mr Faasau. By the time I left samoa - I was a true converted FOB...hahaha...all my Alofa's to anyone that reads this message - please sign in, would love to catch up - 1978 - 1981 Rulz...TAI

Well well well! Samoalive could you forward this to Mr Sanders! Yeah Shedrick! What a surprise when I came across your comments here! Yes, I was at my form 5 at the time ('Tom Devlin with his cup of coffee' was my Maths teacher). Man, I tell you what! I can still remember clearly what you taught me and a couple of friends the other day: "the importance of having a long beard and an attractive mousetache" to a relationship. As a result, I started to grow my mousetache and beard when I left Avele, and I always remember Shedrick every time we joke with friends about my beard.

Talofa lava aiga basket of Leififi College. Hope everyone there is a okay as it is for me. I was a teacher there for three years and then resigned to come to the land of (they say...) milk and honey.(ha!) Hopefully, by the time I return to our homeland, the pay will be better.(ha!) From Savai'i, Samoa to Havai'i, Tahiti to Hawai'i, Big Island of Hawai'i. By: Peter Maleko AhChing Leiataua.

Connections of SISTER ISLANDS in SAMOA, TAHITI & HAWAII: 1500BC Samoa ( Savai'i & Upolu ); in 300AD Tahiti ( Havai'i & Uporu today called Raiatea & Tahaa ); in 500AD Hawaii ( Upolu on Big Island Hawaii & Hamoa on Maui ). Coincidences, no, these were systematically done by the voyaging children of SAVAII to recreate in new lands the names of their old homes.

Educated minds know that ancient Hawaiians were voyaging Polynesians originally from Savai'i, the largest island of SAMOA. During periods of initial island discovery & settlement, when Polynesians ( tagata mao'i = pronounced tanata maohi ) initially from SAVAI'I, SAMOA got to the new islands - these islands of volcanic origin were bare - no others were there.

These early Polynesians brought with them animals ( moa, pua'a, & others ) which became new inhabitants on these bare islands. Because these voyages were very long and arduous 100 to 1000 miles - return voyages back to their original islands were infrequent yet possible - attempted by brave souls mostly.

Polynesians, therefore, recreated in their new found lands the names of the islands they came from, hence today there are these places such as the following : Savai'i ( SAMOA ), Havai'i ( Tahiti ), Hawai'i ( Hawaii - Big Island ), Samoa ( Samoa ), Hamoa ( Hana, Maui - Hawaii ), Ta'u ( Samoa ), Ka'u ( Big Island Hawai'i ), Upolu ( Samoa), & Upolu ( Big Island Hawai'i ). These were not mere coincidences - this was systematically done by the Voyaging children of Savai'i, SAMOA to re-establish familiarity in these newly discovered lands of which they were to now make their homes.

Polynesians from SAMOA ( Savai'i ) 1500 BC journeyed to Marquesas( Nu'uhiva ) 100 AD & Tahiti 300 AD ( and from there ) to HAWAII 500 AD and back into Western Polynesia where AOTEAROA ( New Zealand ) was finally settled in 800 AD. Other island groups were settled too, like the Cook Islands & Rapa nui ( The POLYNESIAN TRIANGLE ).

These Brave Voyagers - who left their island homes due to exiles of war, a voyaging spirit to obtain more lands, or due volcanic eruptions of Savai'i or even due to island overcrowding - for what reason they left and hence their incredible voyages in the vast Pacific Ocean guided by the knowledge of the winds, sea currents and the celestial bodies ( stars, moon, clouds, sun & sky ).

These Polynesians were an ancient race 5000 BC ( Before Birth of Jesus Christ ) or older ( developed mainly in Tonga & SAMOA ). They were isolated from the rest of the continental world, so they were not exposed to many diseases of land origins ( from Europe, Asia nor Africa... etc ).

Polynesians had no immunity to viral & bacterial diseases like Smallpox nor STDs like Syphilis & Gonorrhea ...the flu.( influenza ) .... etc. Upon the arrival of Europeans in Polynesia around 1700s AD, they brought with them diseases that nearly wiped out many Polynesian island populations as in Hawai'i with Smallpox, SAMOA with the Flu epidemic and the Cook islands as well.

This predicament occurred on the other islands as well with Syphilis, Gonorrhea & other diseases, a complete Tragedy. Many Polynesian populations suffered this demise until vaccinations were implemented. Vaccinations thankfully salvaged these dying people of POLYNESIA. Vaccinations were then the innoculation of a small amount of the infective organism to produce an immune response from the body to combat that particular disease upon subsequent reinfection. It was like jumpstarting your immune system to ward off any future diseases from re-exposure. Polynesians were vaccinated for the Flu, Smallpox, tuberculosis & others. They were also given antibiotics ( penicillins ...etc ) for Sexually Transmitted Diseases like Syphilis and Gonorrhea...etc.

With wide use & delivery of Vaccinations & Antibiotics, the Polynesian populations started to stabilize and grow in number again. By this time many foreigners came to Polynesia from Asia, Europe and the Americas to experience the life of simple Paradise that was once the home of these Brave Voyaging Polynesians from Savai'i, SAMOA. Keeping Samoans Out of Hawaii Jails & Prisons ! By: Peter Maleko AhChing Leiataua.

It is a minority thing in Hawaii like in the mainland for Hispanics, low income Whites & Blacks. Not all Samoans, but some like most borderline income families of any ethnicity in HAWAII need education & awareness of positive things. They need to let kids stay in school ( public or private ) and emphasize the importance of " Staying Out of Trouble, No Drugs & NO Teen pregnancy. " These things are not acceptable - Parent & children education is very critical.

Parents need good parenting skills in new environments - thus community programs need to reach out to parents and assure that all the basic needs are met for the entire family. ( Life in SAMOA - community oriented - is very different from LIfe in Hawaii & in U.S = very individualistic and fast ). Community leaders & Parents need to tell kids to " STAY out of TROUBLE - NO GANGS, NO DRUGS, and NO LOITERING. " KIDS need to STAY home and study or read or learn to use computers ....etc. If families don't have these due to poverty, then go to public libraries & hang out there & learn to use these things at public places or at schools or family agencies.

There is an AGENCY in HAWAII - called SAMOAN SERVICE PROVIDERS ASSOCIATION ( SSPA ) in Honolulu, & Kalihi - this is an outreach program for job training, maintenance & family services. Make sure Samoan kids & families are aware & have contact with the SSPA people for other referals based on other necessities ( whatever they need ).

Samoan students also need to know that there are SAMOAN ROLE MODELS in their Communities to emulate & get to know :

Samoan Professionals in HAWAII that we know as SUPER NICE PEOPLE :

(A) LAW, ENFORCEMENT & SERVICES :

(1) High Court Judge: To'oto'o ( last name - nice guy married to a local HAWAII news personality. Super smart - yet retained the SAMOAN kindness & beneficence of a MATAI - ALII ).

(2) Mufi Hanneman - Harvard Graduate & City Council - Foremost Political Leader in Hawaii. He has a Lawyer brother Gus Hanneman,

(3) Gus Hanneman - Lawyer. These brothers are real SAMOANS in heart & in deeds. You will see them on local television...etc...promoting ways to help out HAWAII families. Mufi will be running for HAWAII Honolulu Mayor & Governor.

(4) Police : Erick Tanuvasa ( Former Fresno State Linebacker & Fresno State Coach, High School Counselor & Football Coach at McKinley Tigers ). Awesome guy to hang out with & talk about gang violence & other issues.

(5) Samoan Prison Guards & Officers at HALAWA & OCCC in Hawaii : Silva, Salanoa, Leiataua, Purcell, Danielson....etc. This team of Samoans protect against Violence & prison outbeaks ! These SAMOANS secure Hostile Prisons in HAWAII.

(B) Medicine : Samoans in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, General Practice in Private, Hawaii State Hospitals & in Military Hospitals.

YEAH, if other SAMOANS can do it - then SO CAN YOU. YOU CAN DO IT KIDS ! ! ! Power of Positive Thinking ! The Mind is a Powerful thing - it can make a Heaven or Hell on Earth. Heaven with positive thinking and Hell with negative thoughts.

Other than the HIGH POWERED professional Samoans, well, there are TONS of SAMOAN athletes to emulate from ( thats another article ) like : David Tua, Dwayne Johnson, Junior Seau, Jesse Sapolu, Pisa TinoiSamoa, Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, Marques Tuiasosopo, Joe Salave'a, Joe Onosa'i, Falaniko " NIKO " Vitale and many other proud Sons of Samoa.

SAMOAN kids need to be TAUGHT about these SAMOAN role models. They need to learn to go into these good areas of LIFE ( Professional fields & Sports ) and not into DRUGS, VIOLENCE & GANGS because that's how Samoans end up in PRISON !

Samoans need to maintain POSITIVE ATTITUDES. Examples: YOU CAN DO IT Tama ! This is how TAMA ! GOOD try TAMA, try again ! Its ok, Tama we can do it later ! WE WILL CONTINUE to WORK on it Tama ! Don't get MAD or FRUSTRATED Tama, we can try it another way ! Well Tama, lets see if this one works for us !

All these positive reinforcement statements will keep TAMA out of prison & help him be anything he wants to be. It take guidance, patience and committment to help Tama become a GREAT Lawyer, Doctor or Court Judge.

Note: Some Prisoners in Prison claim they are Samoan for peace, protection & safety - Most of them are not Samoan - don't speak Samoan. It is fashionable for them in prison to claim SAMOAN when indeed they are not - for safety & peace. This we know from Prison GUARD friends.

We know this is BAD because it brings the public perception of SAMOANS down - I guess they claim it for SAFETY in PRISON - good for them, but bad for ALL TRUE SAMOANS. However in Hawaii, there are some Samoans who don't speak Samoan fluently - hence the confusion & dilemma. SAMOANS need a better public image - but being a Samoan in prison in HAWAII must be a safe thing for the inmates - though they are not, they claim SAMOAN for security. Oh well. What would you do if you were a new inmate in a Hawaii prison ? Things to think about.

Australian Aboriginals share the same negroid characteristics ( no disrespect, thats the scientific term for this ) - example. frizzy or tight curly hair, darker skin, nose shape, height & body types - as do the peoples of Melanesia ( Mela = black & nesia = islands ) ex. Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, ---> Fiji ( borderlines ). Fijians have more negroid characteristics compared to other Polynesians. Fiji islands is the border between Polynesia & Melanesia.

The South East Asians, Indonesians and Micronesians share the same mongoloid characteristics ( straight hair, copper tone skin, nose morphology, body types, & height .....etc. ). Samoans, Tongans, Marquesans, Tahitians, Hawaiians and Maoris have more a mixture of mongoloid & negroid features, which makes their look unique from other ancient peoples - the Africans & Asians.

We believe it is the Intermixing of these Peoples - the South East Asians, Indonesians, & Melanesians which had borned a New People of the Pacific Ocean, the POLYNESIANS of West. Poly = Many, Nesia = Islands, also many origins. The largest Samoan Island of SAVAI'I ( the breeding ground )has a history of Samoans, Tongans & Fijians as blood intermixed peoples and coinhabitants, both in war & peace times. Mixed blooded Samoans with Tongan or Fijian lineage populated Savai'i, SAMOA. Many of its KINGS, ALIIs and royalty were from this large Samoan Island ( 3rd Largest in Polynesia = Savai'i, others are AOTEAROA & Big Island Hawai'i ).

Polynesians have a mixture of these mongoloid & negroid features. Look at your Polynesian family members - their eyes, hair, noses, lips, body types and observe the mixed characterisitics. A blood mixture like of a modern day TIGER WOODS or TYSON the model, who both share African & Asian bloodlines ( Negroid & Mongoloid features ).

Polynesians were documented by early Europeans as having wavy or straight hair, muscular bodies, handsome, majestic & intelligent in the way they lived in ordered societies ( Wartime, well that's a different story ). Europeans described Polynesians as looking more Caucasoid than anything else - hence the theories and comparisons to ancient Egyptians or the lost migrating children of Israel. There are also theories about a lost continent of Atlantis in the Pacific Ocean.

Polynesians, described by early European Explorers, were taller, athletic ( Mesomorphic = Muscular in body types), handsome & orderly. They lived in societies with heirarchies cared for by ruling Aliis High chiefs, Priests, Skilled workers ( outrigger canoes, boat & home builders ) and commoners. These peoples had their own culture, religion and a systematic society which was different from all others ( Africans, Asians & Europeans ).

These Polynesians in ocean isolation developed their unique culture, language, and societies in the areas of Tonga & SAMOA around 5000 BC or older. In 1500 BC, they voyaged from their homes in Savai'i, SAMOA ( the largest Samoan Island with live volcanoes & home to Kings & Aliis ) and migrated eastward to Marquesas 100AD & Tahiti ( Havai'i ) 300AD and then to Hawai'i 500AD & Rapa Nui. Upon return trips to Western Polynesia they settled Aotearoa 800-1000AD ( New Zealand ). These brave souls populated the Polynesian Triangle.

It is clear that later after the initial settlements of all Polynesian islands by the Western Polynesians, the Eastern Polynesian Islands had contact with the South American peoples hence the " r " in their languages. It is not sure when this contact occurred with the South Americans but it is clear that there is South American influence in Eastern Polynesia.

Because Polynesians were seperated & isolated in the vast South Pacific Ocean, they were not exposed to diseases of continental populations of ASIA, AFRICA, EUROPE, & the AMERICAS. They were unique from all others - pristine like the bare new islands they had discovered & settled in Polynesia. Thus upon the arrivals of Europeans & other continental peoples, these once healthy people entered into a period of new Diseases & a BRAVE NEW WORLD of GLOBALIZATION. They named the islands of Tahiti, Havai'i & Uporu after the Samoan islands they came from Savai'i & Upolu in the west. They then voyaged from Havai'i to the north & settled the Hawaiian islands & named the biggest island ' Hawai'i ' & its parts Upolu. They also named the coast of Maui, ' Hamoa ' after Samoa in Western Polynesia. Havai'i & Uporu of Tahiti are today called Raiatea & Tahaa by the French Polynesia Government 2003AD.

(2) SAVAI'I & UPOLU ( SAMOA 2000BC ) --> HAVAI'I & UPORU ( Tahiti 300AD ) & MARQUESAS 100AD --> HAWAI'I 500AD with UPOLU & HAMOA {SAMOA}, MAUI ( HAWAI'I ).

The distance between the islands of Savai'i, Samoa & Hawai'i is about 2500 miles, about 5 hours by airplane, or weeks / months at sea to get there. Samoans of Samoa did not travel to Hawaii to fight wars. They settled & claimed the lands in Hawaii by way of Tahiti & Marquesas. Wars in ancient Hawai'i were between the Samoan descendant chiefs or ali'is of Marquesas & Tahiti. The Tahiti chiefs have lineage to Savai'i ali'is of ancient Samoa. The lineage of Kamehameha was from Havai'i & Savai'i ali'is of Samoa, the ancient land of lava flows, volcanoes, ali'is & kings. Yes, the Kamehameha lineage ties Tahiti ( Havai'i ) & Samoa ( Savai'i ).

Lies about being ancient enemies can stir up much animosity between these two communities Hawaiian & Samoan and may lead to Hatred and Violence. Are we too sensitive? Its just a movie? No, it's not just a movie - all jokes aside: it wont be so funny, when little KEIKI or TAMA gets beaten up or gets killed by others proclaiming their ancestral pride. We have learned from Tongan & Samoan relations that this can be the case.

Many youths of SAMOA & TONGA have been seriously injured or died from violence - by idiots proclaiming their ancestral wars. Many cases of Violence between Tongans & Samoans have been documented in California, Utah, Washington State, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. Unnecessary violence between these two communities were in part due to the truthful knowledge of their ANCESTRAL WARS. Sure, Tonga & Samoa in wars = Yes this is the TRUTH due to living 100 miles proximity.

However, HAWAII & SAMOA were never in ancient wars, they lived 2500 miles apart and had no ancient AIRPLANES for battle. Samoans had voyaging canoes, but these got them to Marquesas & Tahiti, and then from there 1000 miles to Hawaii. Samoans & Tongans used war canoes during their ancestral wars, but they lived close to each other around 100 miles. Samoans and Hawaiians in ancestral wars - LIES to hype a MOVIE. This is SAD because it's at the expense of community relations. These LIES for the KAMEHAMEHA movie HYPE must be addressed as just that ' LIES. '
