PRESS RELEASE 15 JUNE 2000
SMOKEFREE
CAMPAIGN THIS WEEKEND
Samoa Netball;s support for the SMOKEFREE campaign is all year round and a commitment has been made to the following policies:
1. The Netball Courts at Apia Park are a smokefree environment and this applies to all netball teams and clubs who use this facility;
2. The “B” and “C” grade winners are awarded SMOKEFREE trophies;
3. The slogan “Drop smoking: pick up netball” is used on all letterheads;
4. A SMOKEFREE banner is displayed at the Apia Park courts;
5. An awareness tournament has been organised.
A further initiative was the display of the words “SMOKEFREE” on the players’ sports bags and gear bags to the 1999 World Netball Championships.
In 2000 the Samoa Netball Association has extended its awareness campaign. Previously the tournament, which has been held for 4 years, had involved eight Junior High Schools from both Upolu and Savaii. This year it has been reformatted to be representative of Under 21 players from the whole country.
This is an exciting development which is better exposure for the SMOKEFREE campaign and also for the development programme. Additionally it is an achievement for the school girls to be selected to represent their zones as a follow through from their zone competitions.
NETBALL and SMOKEFREE will continue to work together to heighten the awareness for people to stop smoking for their own health and that of the people around them
Samoa

Netball New Zealand tonight forwarded the names of
the players who have been selected for the Pasifica team which has been created
to substitute for Fiji’s
internationals which have been postponed.
Of the nine players named, five are Samoa reps:
Amanda Dunlop, (1989-1999),
Monica Gabriel, (1995-1999),
Irene Forbes, (1996-1999),
Sheryl Clarke, (1999),
Ruta Tai (1996)
The Executive of Samoa Netball is very pleased with
this dominance of selection which is a credit to the skills and dedication of
the players and the good planning and selection process in recent years.
